Cabinet scope matters more than the room label
Keeping sound cabinet boxes, refacing doors or using stock replacement can produce a very different project from custom millwork. Record cabinet linear footage, interior accessories, hardware and installation in the scope. “New cabinets” is too vague for a useful comparison.
Layout changes create connected costs
Moving a sink, range, island or wall can add plumbing, electrical, framing, flooring repair and permit work at the same time. The calculator treats layout as a scope factor, but a contractor still needs to inspect the actual routing and structure.
Make allowances visible
Ask each bidder to show the included dollar allowance for appliances, counters, tile, fixtures and hardware. Normalize those allowances before comparing totals. A quote can look lower simply because it assumes cheaper products.
Canadian taxes and permits are separate
GST, HST and provincial sales tax are not automatically added to the calculator. Permit requirements and fees are local. Confirm both before treating the planning range as a total project budget.
Keep a separate contingency
Older wiring, damaged subfloor and plumbing issues may only appear after demolition. Keep the contingency outside the finish allowance so one surprise does not force you to cut essential work.
Dollar examples are rounded outputs from Home Cost Canada’s editorial planning model, not observed contractor quotes or official government price lists. Review the assumptions and limitations before using them.
