What does moving cost in Canada? Start with the scope
A two-to-three-bedroom household move in Home Cost Canada's Canada-average editorial planning model, with partial packing, typical access and timing, produces the following illustrative ranges. The model uses distance categories, not kilometres or actual driving hours. These are calculated scenarios, not surveyed 2026 mover quotes.
| Distance selection | Modelled range, CAD | What the option means |
|---|---|---|
| Local | $990–$2,160 | Model distance factor 0.90×; actual route unspecified |
| Regional | $1,320–$2,880 | Model distance factor 1.20×; not a defined km band |
| Long distance | $1,980–$4,320 | Model distance factor 1.80×; does not quote cross-country carrier pricing |
All three examples use identical household size, partial packing, average region and ordinary access. These numbers are model outputs based on the calculator's $1,100–$2,400 baseline; taxes, storage, specialty items and carrier-specific surcharges are not necessarily included. For an interprovincial move, obtain an itemized route-specific quote rather than relying on this broad scenario.
Which factors actually change your mover's quote?
- Inventory and volume: list furniture, boxes, appliances and fragile goods. A “three-bedroom” move with a packed garage is a different load from a minimal household.
- Travel and labour: ask whether the clock starts when the crew leaves its depot, at pickup or only after loading. Confirm waiting time, tolls, fuel and delivery commitments.
- Packing and protection: distinguish self-packed boxes, fragile-item packing, supplies, dismantling and reassembly. Owner-packed items can have different liability treatment.
- Access: stairs, long carries, elevator bookings, tight parking and building move-in windows can add time even on a short trip.
- Date: month-end and summer availability can affect the quote. The calculator treats this as a selectable assumption, not a real-time price feed.
Get three comparable written quotes
The federal Office of Consumer Affairs recommends getting estimates from at least three reputable movers and being clear about what is included. Give each company the same room-by-room inventory and both addresses. Ask whether the company doing the work is a mover or a broker arranging a subcontractor.
A useful comparison sheet has columns for load size, pickup/delivery windows, crew size, travel billing, packing, insurance/valuation options, storage, taxes and the deposit/cancellation terms. A low quote that excludes two hours of travel or an elevator surcharge is not necessarily cheaper.
Check for a physical business address, references and a written estimate; request the full terms before paying a deposit. Be cautious about unexpectedly large prepayments or phone-only estimates with no confirmed inventory.
Local moves and long-distance moves need different questions
Local: confirm hourly minimums, crew size, truck charges, parking, stairs and what happens if the job exceeds the estimated hours. Ask who arranges building elevator access and whether your movers will use protective mats.
Long distance: confirm the complete inventory, whether the cost is based on weight, volume or a contract rate, the proposed pickup/delivery windows, transfers, storage, coverage and claims procedure. Do not assume the website's 1.80× “long distance” multiplier is a real interprovincial rate.
Worked quote-comparison example
Two written estimates may each show $2,200, but one includes packing supplies and disposal of used packing while the other charges for them separately. Put any exclusions on a separate line and compare the all-in scope. If an item or service appears on one quote but not the other, ask for an amended written quote before treating the totals as equivalent.
Common questions
Can I use a city choice for an exact mover price? No. The calculator applies a broad regional planning factor, not surveyed local moving-company tariffs.
Does it calculate routes or kilometres? No. The distance choices are model categories. Provide the actual addresses and estimated distance to movers.
Are storage and piano moving included? Do not assume so. Obtain specific terms and charges from the company for storage, heavy items and special handling.
Inputs and regional multipliers represent transparent editorial scenarios; they cannot replace a written local quote, professional assessment or current local rule check.
