Window replacement cost in Canada: compare the installation, not only the unit

A retrofit insert and a full-frame replacement can use the same number of windows but involve very different labour and finishing. Opening changes, exterior cladding, interior trim, water damage and difficult access can also move the final price.

Count and classify the windows before requesting quotes

List window size, operating style, frame material, glazing, egress needs and whether each opening is insert, full-frame or structurally changing. Then use the window replacement cost guide to normalize the scope.

Keep hidden-condition work visible

Rot, flashing defects, damaged sheathing and interior finish repair should be separated from the base window allowance where possible. That makes contractor totals easier to compare and reduces surprise change orders.

After the estimate

Use the range to price one written scope.

Ask contractors to price the same materials, quantities, preparation, permits, disposal and exclusions. A cheaper total with smaller allowances is not necessarily a cheaper project.

Use the calculator with an installation specification

A window count alone cannot describe the project. Record whether the quote is for inserts or full-frame replacement, the frame and glazing specification, opening changes, exterior flashing, interior trim, disposal and finishing. Natural Resources Canada notes that insert and full tear-out replacements are different installation scopes, which is why the calculator separates more than just quantity.
